Pony Express and Fahrenheit Open!

29 05 2008

May was the big month for park and ride openings!  Pony Express and Fahrenheit are two coasters that opened this month.  Let’s start with Fahrenheit.

Fahrenheit – Hersheypark (Hershey, PA)

I have already discussed this coaster in a previous blog post, so lets talk about the reviews of this ride.  Positive things said about the coaster included smoothness and interesting elements.  Some drawbacks were that the ride was short, while the lines were long.  Over all the verdict was ‘very enjoyable’.

Pony Express – Knott’s Berry Farm (Buena Park, CA)

Again, I have previously discussed this ride.  Over all, the reviews were positive.  People said that the “motorcycle” seating arrangement was fun, but that it was too short and could have used some airtime.  People recommended this coaster for families, rather than thrill-seekers.

I hope that I will get to ride these coasters soon!  When I do, I will report back!

New for ’08-Pony Express

Pony Express-Coming to KBF in '08!

Pony Express will be the latest addition to Knott’s Berry Farm. It will be one of the first motorcycle-style roller coasters to open in the US. It is a “MotoCoaster” manufactured by Zamperla. It will be 44′ high, 1300′ long, and have a launch of 0-38 m.p.h. in 3 seconds. The Layout of Pony ExpressSome people have been disappointed with this coaster. There were rumors about a Maverick style Intamin TerraCoaster for a similar location as Pony Express. The coaster’s layout is unimpressive, being very small, short, and slow. I, however, am excited about Pony Express. This coaster fits into the limited space that KBF has. It has a great theme for the Ghost Town area of the park. The unique ride system will be interesting to try out. Pony Express will be a fun ride for the whole family, not just thrill seekers. While the layout doesn’t look too impressive, the ride’s close interaction with surrounding structures will make it fun to ride. Hopefully, I will get to try this one out this summer!

New for ’08-Dominator

Dominator-Coming to KD in '08!

Dominator is the latest addition to Kings Dominion, a Cedar Fair park in Doswell, VA. It is a B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard) floorless coaster. It is not a brand new coaster; Dominator is being relocated from Geauga (Gee-ah-guh) Lake, another Cedar Fair park. The coaster is 4210′ long, is 157′ tall, a ride time of 2:06, and a maximum speed of 65 m.p.h. Dominator is notable because it is the longest of its kind and features the largest loop on a coaster.

While many residents of VA are happy about the park getting its first B&M ride, residents of Ohio are sad to see this one leave. Cedar Fair’s decision to close the amusement park section of Geauga Lake is not without opposition. It is a rather historic park, having one of the last coasters standing that was designed by the great John Miller. While some of GL’s coasters have found homes (Dominator @ KD, Beaver Land Mine Ride @ CP?), The Big Dipper remains in limbo. The question is whether to demolish the 1920’s era ride, relocate it, or keep it. The right thing to do would be to fix it up to its former glory (retracking, a coat of white paint, NAD century flyers?) and include it as part of a retro/nostalgic theme for the waterpark.
